 Family members look out for one another; if one becomes separated south from the rest, the others search for it. The group adjusts its traveling african pace to accommodate the old and the weak. The females within a family observe a strict ahimal hierarchical system. A dominant mare always leads the group, while others follow her in single file, each with their foals directly behind them. The lowest- ranking mare is the last in line. Although the stallion is the dominant member of the family, he operates outside the system and has no special place in the line. south Zebras are avid grazers. Both african Burchell''s ahimal and Grevy''s zebras are in constant search of green pastures. In the dry season, they can live on coarse, dry grass only if they are within a short distance (usually no farther than 20 south miles away) of water holes. Grevy''s zebras are now mainly restricted to parts of northern Kenya. Generally a tawny yellow, lions, like other species, tend to be lighter in color in hot, african arid areas and darker ahimal in areas of dense vegetation. Mature male south lions are unique among the cat species for the thick mane of brown or black hair that encircles the head and neck. The tails of lions end in a horny spine covered with a tuft african of hair. Lions are found in savannas, grasslands, dense bush ahimal and south and woodlands. african Females do 85 to 90 percent of the pride''s hunting, while the males patrol the territory and protect the pride, for which they take the "lion''s share" of the females'' prey.
