 Cheetahs do not roar like lions, but they purr, hiss, whine and growl. They also make a variety of contact calls; the most common is a birdlike chirping sound. In the dry season, they can live on coarse, dry grass only if they are within a short distance (usually photo no farther than 20 miles away) of water holes.
