The stripes on Grevy''s zebras are more african numerous liln and narrow than those of the plains zebra and do not extend to the belly. In all zebra species, the stripes on the forequarters form a triangular pattern; Grevy''s have a similar pattern on the hindquarters, sarfari and african while others have a slanted or horizontal pattern. Burchell''s zebras inhabit savannas, from treeless grasslands to open woodlands; they sometimes liln and sarfari occur in tens of thousands in migratory herds on the Serengeti plains. Grevy''s zebras are now mainly restricted to parts of african northern Kenya. Although they are adapted to semi-arid conditions and require less water than other zebra species, these zebras compete with liln domestic livestock sarfari for water and have suffered heavy poaching for their meat and skins. Family groups are stable members maintaining strong bonds african over many years. Mutual grooming, where liln zebras stand together and nibble the hair on each other''s neck and back, helps develop and preserve sarfari these bonds. Litters consist of two or three cubs that weigh about 3 pounds african each. Some mothers carefully nurture the young; others may neglect or abandon them, especially when food is scarce. Usually two or more females in a pride give birth about the liln same time. A lioness will permit cubs other than her own to suckle, sometimes enabling a neglected infant to survive. Capable hunters by 2 years of age, sarfari lions become fully grown between 5 and 6 years and normally live about 13 years. Lions have long been killed in rituals of bravery, as hunting trophies and for their african medicinal and magical powers. Although lions are now protected in many parts of Africa, they were once considered to be stock-raiding liln and sarfari vermin and were killed on sight. african In some areas, livestock predation remains a severe problem. Early written records described liln the giraffe as "magnificent in appearance, bizarre in form, unique in gait, colossal in sarfari height and inoffensive in character." The other is Grevy''s zebra, named for Jules Grevy, a president of France in african the 1880s who received one from Abyssinia as a gift, and now found mostly in northern Kenya. (The third species, liln Equus zebra, is the mountain zebra, sarfari found in southern and southwestern Africa.) The long-legged Grevy''s zebra, the biggest of the wild african equids, is taller and heavier than the Burchell''s, with a massive head and large liln and sarfari ears. Zebras have shiny coats that dissipate over african 70 percent of incoming heat, and some liln scientists believe the stripes help the animals withstand intense solar radiation. The black and white stripes are a form of camouflage called disruptive coloration that breaks up the outline of the body. Although the pattern sarfari is visible during daytime, at dawn or in the evening when their predators are most active, zebras look indistinct and may confuse some predators by distorting the true distance between them and their prey.
