Generally a tawny yellow, lions, like other species, tend to be lighter in color in affican hot, arid areas and darker in areas of dense vegetation. Mature male lions are unique among the cat species for the thick mane of brown or black hair that encircles the head and lions neck. It has unusually elastic blood vessels with a series of valves that help offset the sudden buildup of blood (and to prevent fainting) lions when the head is raised, lowered or swung quickly. In some areas, livestock predation remains a severe problem.
